Mw 6.9 Southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge

On 17 June 2015 a strong earthquake occurred at Southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge at a depth of 10 km. The seismic event occurred at 12:51:32 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 6.9.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of planetary and lunar geometry on 14 and 16 June 2015.

On 14 June a planetary conjunction occurred with Earth, the Sun and Mars, shortly before New Moon. This conjunction converged with a lunar conjunction with Saturn. On 16 June two lunar conjunctions converged with only one hour in-between, the first with Mars and the second with the Sun (New Moon).

Lunar geometry with Uranus, Neptune and Venus on 15-16 June may have contributed to the seismic event.
