Mw 8.6 Off West Coast of Northern Sumatra

On 11 April 2012 a mega-thrust earthquake occurred off the west coast of Northern Sumatra at a depth of 20 km. The seismic event occurred at 08:38:36 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 8.6. A second great earthquake occurred two hours later.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is critical lunar geometry on 9 April 2012.

A convergence of critical planetary geometry (PGme, PGve) occurred on 4 April 2012 and was followed by a planetary conjunction Mercury-Sun-Jupiter on 5 April. Due to Earth's close proximity to the Mars-Neptune vector critical lunar geometry in the form of opposite right and semi-right angles occurred on 6 and 9 April with both outer planets, while lunar conjunctions with Saturn and Jupiter occurred on 7-8 April. The critical lunar geometry on 9 April coincided with critical planetary geometry (PGme).

The planetary and lunar geometry involving Mars and Neptune in April 2012 is comparable to the geometry in January-March 1957 that resulted in a mega-thrust earthquake in March.
