Mw 9.1 Near East Coast of Honshu, Japan

On 11 March 2011 a mega-thrust earthquake occurred near the east coast of Honshu, Japan at a depth of 29 km. The seismic event occurred at 05:46:23 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 9.1.
The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of critical planetary and lunar geometry on 6-7 March 2011.
On 5 March 2011 two planetary conjunctions with Mercury occurred within three hours, involving the Sun, Jupiter and Saturn, effectively forming a near quadruple conjunctions with Jupiter and Saturn on opposite sides of the Solar System. This geometry was followed on 6-7 March by lunar conjunctions with both outer planets while two additional planetary conjunctions (Jupiter-Mercury-Saturn and Venus-Mars-Uranus) occurred. An initial seismic increase occurred on 6-7 March with strong tremors in Chile, South Sandwich Islands Region and the Solomon Islands. Early on 9 March a major foreshock occurred near the east coast of Honshu, Japan. An additional planetary conjunction of Earth, Mercury and Uranus later on 9 March converged with critical planetary geometry of Mercury and Venus on 9-10 March. More foreshocks occurred on 9 March and strong earthquakes also occurred in New Britain Region and the Bali Sea. The mega-thrust earthquake in the morning of 11 March occurred at the first higher lunar peak relative to the critical planetary and lunar geometry on 6-7 March.
