Mw 7.2 Western Turkey
updated 12 November 2022

On 12 November 1999 a major earthquake occurred in Western Turkey at a depth of 10 km. The seismic event occurred at 16:57:19 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.2. It was the second major earthquake in the region after a Mw 7.6 earthquake occurred a few months earlier.

On 7 November a convergence of right angles occurred with Mercury and the four jovian planets. A seismic increase occurred on 8 November in Afghanistan-Tajikistan-Paksitan region (Mw 6.5). On 9 November the critical conjunction Venus-Mercury-Neptune converged with a right angle involving both inner planets and Jupiter. On 10 November another right angle with Venus, Mars and Saturn converged with a lunar semi-right angle, which was followed by another lunar semi-right angle a day later. As a result, additional larger seismic activity occurred on the 11th at the Kuril Islands (Mw 6.1) and Northern Sumatra (Mw 6.2). Early on 12 November, hours before the major earthquake, the conjunction Sun-Mercury-Jupiter converged with a right angle of Mercury with Mars and Saturn, just as Venus did two days earlier.
