Mw 7.4 Northern Iran

updated 29 April 2024

report

On 20 June 1990 a major earthquake occurred in Northern Iran at a depth of 18 km. The seismic event occurred at 21:00:09 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.4.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is lunar right angle geometry on 17-18 June 1990.

In June 1990 Saturn, Uranus and Neptune were opposite Jupiter in the Solar System with Earth in-between. This resulted in critical lunar geometry, specifically, opposing lunar conjunctions, right angles and semi-right angles, depicted on the SSGI common graph by the high green peaks.

On 17 and 18 June a series of four lunar right angles occurred with all four outer planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, whereby the angles with Jupiter opposed the angles with the other three planets.

In addition, five planetary right angles occurred on 18 and 19 June, four of which involved Mercury and one with Earth.

Lunar semi-right angle geometry with Jupiter and Neptune on 14 June, likewise converging with critical planetary geometry, resulted in a major earthquake (Mw 7.1) at Panay, Philippines.
