On 3 January 1911 a great earthquake occurred in northern Tien Shan, Kyrgyzstan at a depth of 20 km. The seismic event occurred at 23:25:49 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 8.0.
The earthquake occurred at a time that a series of planetary alignments occurred from 27 December 1910 to 4 January 1911. As can be seen from the geometry involved, in particular the lunar geometry, Uranus and Neptune were on opposite sides of the Solar System and the Moon aligned with both outer planets on 1-2 January. A strong earthquake occurred in Central Afghanistan on 1 January as a precursor, following the Moon's alignment with Mars on 29 December that coincided with two planetary alignments, while Mars aligned with the Sun and Mercury on 31 December. Most critical and the direct trigger was the Moon's alignment with Neptune and Venus on 1 January, just a few hours apart, as Earth was lining up with both planets. The alignment was exact late on 2 January, about 24 hours before the great earthquake occurred.
