Mw 7.9 Offshore Northern California

updated 18 April 2025

report

On 18 April 1906 a major earthquake occurred at Offshore Northern California at a depth of 11.7 km. The seismic event occurred at 13:12:26 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.9.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of planetary and lunar geometry from 12 to 15 april 1906.

From 12 to 15 April Mercury and Venus made pairs of semi-right angle geometry (45°, 135°) with both Uranus and Neptune. This is a rare cluster of critical geometry and it occurred because Uranus and Neptune were on opposite sides of the Solar System, with Earth passing in-between in April 1906, which resulted in similar critical lunar geometry on 11 and 18 April. Lunar conjunctions with Uranus and Neptune converged on 14 April.

In 1905 and especially 1906 Earth moved close to the Uranus-Neptune line, which resulted in critical lunar geometry with both planets each time. To date 1906 is seismically still the most active year on record with no less than 22 magnitude ≥ 7.0 and 7 magnitude ≥ 7.8 earthquakes, 5(!) of which reached magnitude ≥ 8. The largest earthquake measured magnitude 8.8 on 31 January near the coast of Ecuador. A similar sized earthquake did not occur until 1952.
