Mw 7.9 Northern California

updated 23 December 2022

report

On 18 April 1906 a major earthquake occurred at San Francisco, Northern California at a depth of 12km. The seismic event occurred at 13:12:26 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.9.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is critical lunar geometry with Uranus and Neptune on 14 and 18 April.

In 1906 Uranus and Neptune were on opposite sides of the Solar System. This resulted several times in (near) conjunctions with Earth as well as critical lunar geometry with both outer planets. This type of lunar geometry with outer planets is associated with major to great earthquakes and several of them occurred in 1905 and 1906 following this geometry. In 1906 alone 22 earthquakes occurred with magnitude 7 and larger, seven of which with magnitude 7.8 and larger and five with magnitude 8.

On 14 April 1906 lunar conjunctions with Uranus and Neptune occurred within about 1 hour, following the lunar semi-right angles with the same planets on 11 April, which resulted in major earthquakes on 13-14 April. Early on 18 April, hours before the earthquake in Northern California, the same lunar semi-right angles occurred, but opposite relative to Uranus and Neptune. In addition, planetary paired semi-right angles of Mercury and Venus occurred with Uranus and Neptune on 12-13 and 14-15 April.
