Mw 7.3 Solomon Islands

updated 28 December 1906

report

On 19 February 1906 a major earthquake occurred at the Solomon Islands at a depth of 15 km. The seismic event occurred at 01:59:55 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.3.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event are lunar semi-right angles with Uranus and Neptune on 15-16 February 1906 followed by a lunar conjunction with Jupiter.

In 1906 Uranus and Neptune were on opposite sides of the Solar System. This resulted several times in (near) conjunctions with Earth as well as critical lunar geometry with both outer planets. This type of lunar geometry with outer planets is associated with major to great earthquakes and several of them occurred in 1905 and 1906 following this geometry. In 1906 alone 22 earthquakes occurred with magnitude 7 and larger, seven of which with magnitude 7.8 and larger and five with magnitude 8.

During January and February 1906 Earth was moving close to the Uranus-Neptune line and made a conjunction with the outer planets on 1 March and 7 May. From 12 to 19 February the time between critical lunar geometry with Uranus and Neptune shortened from 1.5 hours to less than an hour. On 12 February lunar right angles with both outer planets occurred, followed by lunar semi-right angles on 15-16 February. The earthquake occurred near the time of the two lunar conjunctions on 19 February, less than 3 days after the lunar conjunction with Jupiter. In addition, a pair of critical planetary right angles of Mercury and Venus with Jupiter occurred on 13 and 17 February.
