On 28 April 1903 a major earthquake occurred at Manzikert, Turkey. The seismic event occurred at 23:46 UTC and had an estimated surface wave magnitude (Ms) 7.0.
The earthquake occurred at the time that Uranus and Neptune were on opposite sides of the solar system. As a result Mercury regularly aligned with the outermost planets in a very short time (1-2 days), which was the case on 23 and 24 April 1903. In addition, Venus aligned with the Sun and Saturn on the 26th. Lunar geometry peaked high on 24-25 and 27-28 April, after which the earthquake occurred.
