Mw 9.2 Off East Coast of Kamchatka

updated 29 December 2022

report

On 16 May 1841 a mega-thrust earthquake occurred off the east coast of Kamchatka. The seismic event occurred at 21:30 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 9.0-9.2.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a near convergence of three planetary conjunctions on 12-15 May 1841.

On 12 May 1841 the critical planetary conjunctions Mercury-Venus-Mars and Sun-Mercury-Uranus converged, whereby Earth was in a near conjunction with the Sun and Venus, which became exact on 15 May, a day before the earthquake. In addition, the outer planets Saturn, Uranus and Neptune were each approx. 45° apart causing critical geometry with the Moon, Mercury and Venus.
