Mw 7.5 Southeastern Missouri

updated 24 July 2023

report

On 7 February 1812 a major earthquake occurred in Southeastern Missouri. The seismic event occurred at 09:45 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.5.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is critical lunar geometry with Jupiter and Saturn due to Earth's position between the two Jovians, which were on opposite sides of the Solar System in 1811-1812.

Critical lunar geometry with Jupiter and Saturn occurred on 1-2 February and on 5-6 February 1812, similar to the geometry two weeks earlier and in December 1811. The timing of the major seismic events in the New Madrid seismic zone in 1811 and 1812 was largely determined by the positions of Jupiter and Saturn, although the positions of the Jovians from 1810 to 1812 were such that Jupiter was in opposition with the other three multiple times with Earth in-between.
