Mw 7.0 Southeastern Missouri

On 16 December 1811 a major earthquake occurred in southeastern Missouri. The seismic event occurred at 13:15 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.0.
The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is critical lunar geometry with Jupiter and Saturn due to Earth's position between the two Jovians, which were on opposite sides of the Solar System in 1811-1812.
Three planetary conjunctions involving Earth occurred from 9 to 12 December 1811, significant of which were those involving Mercury with Jupiter and Saturn, which occurred in opposite fashion. Lunar conjunctions with the Jovians occurred on 16 December, but critical lunar right and semi-right angles already occurred on 9 and 12-13 December respectively. This geometry (including Mercury) is comparable to the geometry that preceded the 2011 mega-thrust earthquake. Conjunctions with Earth, the Sun, Jupiter and Saturn occurred on 21 and 23 December 1811. As Earth moved in the same direction as Jupiter, critical lunar geometry with the two Jovians continued to occur during the first half of 1812.
The earthquake occurred at a lunar conjunction with the Sun (New Moon). It was preceded by a major earthquake several hours earlier.
