Mw 8.5 South of Java, Indonesia

On 22 January 1780 a great earthquake occurred South of Java, Indonesia. The seismic event occurred at 07:39 UTC and had an estimated minimum moment magnitude (Mw) 8.0-8.5.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of two planetary conjunctions on 20 January 1780 followed by a Full Moon on 22 January.

From 16 to 22 January 1780 five planetary conjunctions occurred, four of which converged on 16 and 20 January. Most critical was the convergence of Sun-Mercury-Jupiter and Venus-Mercury-Neptune on 20 January, the latter of which is associated with large earthquakes (compare 2018, 2019). After the convergence of planetary conjunctions on 16 January a major earthquake occurred at the Kuril Islands. Critical lunar conjunctions occurred on 15, 18, 19 and 22 January. Opposing lunar right angles occurred on 19 and 20 January (23 hours in-between) with Mars and Neptune.
