Mw 8.8 Near Coast of Central Peru
updated 24 November 2022

On 29 October 1746 a great earthquake occurred near the coast of Central Peru at a depth of 30 km. The seismic event occurred at 03:30 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) of up to 8.8.

Critical planetary geometry converged early on 26 October with the planetary conjunction Sun-Mercury-Saturn coinciding with two right angles involving Mercury (twice) and Venus. They were preceded by two critical semi-right angles of Mercury and Venus involving Uranus that coincided with a lunar peak partially caused by the lunar conjunction with Mars. The planetary conjunction on 26 October was followed by the critical lunar conjunction Moon-Earth-Saturn two days later, which was close to the Full Moon on 29 October. Convergence of critical lunar geometry involving outer planets occurred in particular on 24 October (semi-right angles), 25 October (right angles) and early on 29 October (semi-right angles).
