Mw 9.3 Off East Coast of Kamchatka

updated 29 December 2022

report

On 16 October 1737 a mega-thrust earthquake occurred off the east coast of Kamchatka at a depth of 40 km. The seismic event occurred at 16:00 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 9.3.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event are opposing lunar conjunctions with Uranus and Neptune on 15 October 1737.

Uranus and Neptune were on opposite sides of the Solar System from approx. 1736 to 1738 and critical lunar geometry occurred repeatedly with both outer planets during that time, similar to the geometry during 1906.

On 11 October lunar semi-right angles with Uranus and Neptune occurred, followed by opposing conjunctions on the 15th accompanied by Saturn, which caused a high lunar peak. Earth was in a near conjunction with Venus and Jupiter and the conjunction became exact in the morning on 17 October. This conjunction caused critical lunar geometry with Venus and Jupiter, in particular the right angles on 13-14 October. Of note are the Venus conjunctions with Uranus and Neptune on 8-9 October
