Mw 8.7 Near South Coast of Western Honshu, Japan
updated 15 November 2022

On 28 October 1707 a great earthquake occurred near the south coast of western Honshu, Japan. The seismic event occurred at 5:00 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 8.7. Next to the 869 Sanriku earthquake and the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, it is among the largest earthquakes in known history to have occurred in Japan.

A convergence of critical planetary geometry first occurred on 21 October 1707 with the conjunctions Venus-Earth-Neptune and Mercury-Sun-Neptune within 3 hours. This convergence was followed a day later by a high lunar peak, partially due to a lunar conjunction with Jupiter. On 23-24 October Venus made two semi-right angles with Earth involving Jupiter and Saturn converging with the Mercury-Sun-Earth conjunction. On 25-26 October, five lunar conjunctions converged, including New Moon. These lunar conjunctions coincided with a convergence of the two planetary conjunctions Venus-Sun-Neptune and Sun-Mercury-Mars. The better part of this convergence of critical planetary and lunar geometry was very tight with six conjunctions in less than 24 hours that peaked during New Moon late on 25 October. In addition, early on 26 October two lunar semi-right angles occurred with Jupiter and Saturn. Finally, early on 28 October the Earth-Mercury-Mars conjunction converged with a right angle of Mercury involving Jupiter and Saturn, which is when the earthquake occurred.
