On 22 November 1683 a major earthquake occurred in Shanxi, China. The seismic event occurred around 05:00 UTC and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.0.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of critical planetary and lunar geometry from 17 to 19 November 1683.

From 17 to 21 November five planetary conjunctions occurred, including Venus-Mercury-Earth on the 17th, which were part of two quadruple conjunction with the Sun. The first conjunction occurred on the 17th with Venus, the Sun, Mercury and Earth. The second conjunction, with the Sun, Mars, Saturn and Neptune occurred around the time of the earthquake, with Saturn and Neptune on opposite sides of the Solar System. Because the two quadruple conjunctions occurred at a right angle, a long series of planetary right angles occurred with Mercury, Venus and Earth from 15 to 23 November. Critical opposing lunar right angles with Saturn and Neptune occurred on 18-19 November.
