Mw 7.9 Central Turkey

On 17 August 1668 a major earthquake occurred in Central Turkey. The seismic event occurred late in the morning local time and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.9 and surface wave magnitude (Ms) 7.8-8.0.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a double right angle of Venus with Mercury and Jupiter on 13-14 August 1668, followed by a lunar conjunction with Jupiter.

While planetary conjunctions occurred on 12 and late 17 August 1668, they were of less influence. Much more significant was the (rare) double right angle geometry of Venus with Mercury and Jupiter on 13-14 August, followed by critical lunar conjunctions with Mars and Jupiter on 15-16 August.
