On 25 July 1668 a great earthquake occurred in Tancheng, Shandong, China. The seismic event had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 8.5.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of three planetary conjunctions on 17 July 1668.

A convergence of critical planetary conjunctions occurred on 17 July. The Mercury-Venus-Neptune conjunction in particular is associated with large earthquakes. A series of critical right angles with Mercury as well as lunar conjunctions with outer planets followed 18-24 July. Critical lunar right and semi-right angles occurred on 20 and 23 July, converging with the lunar conjunctions with Jupiter and Neptune and followed by Full Moon and the lunar conjunction with Saturn on the 24th. The earthquake occurred late, after the second higher lunar peak relative to the convergence of critical planetary conjunctions on 17 July, which most likely triggered precursor seismic activity following the first lunar peak on 20 July.
