Ms 8.6 Near South Coast of Honshu, Japan

On 19 September 1498 a great earthquake occurred near the south coast of Honshu, Japan. The seismic event occurred around 23:00 UTC and had an estimated surface wave magnitude (Ms) 8.6.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is the Mercury-Venus-Neptune conjunction on 15 September 1498.

Critical planetary conjunctions occurred close to New Moon on 15 September, most notably Mercury-Venus-Neptune, which coincided with a critical lunar conjunction involving Mars. Critical planetary geometry converged again on 18 September with five right and semi-right angles involving Mercury and Venus, which coincided with a critical lunar conjunction involving Saturn.
