On 22 December 856 a major earthquake occurred in Northern Iran. The seismic event occurred at night local time and had an estimated moment magnitude (Mw) 7.9.

The estimated primary trigger of this seismic event is a convergence of three planetary conjunctions on 20-21 December 856.

On 20-21 December 856 three planetary conjunctions occurred, critical of which were Mars-Venus-Jupiter on the 20th and Sun-Mercury-Neptune on the 21st. In addition, Venus was in a near conjunction with Mars and Uranus and the conjunction was exact on the 23rd. The planets Jupiter, Venus, Mars and Uranus were in a near quadruple conjunction in the last week of December 856 whereby Jupiter and Uranus were on opposite sides of the Solar System. Indeed, on 18-19 and on 22 December critical lunar right and semi-right angles occurred with both outer planets and this geometry is associated with major to great seismic activity. In addition, four critical planetary right angles of Mercury and Venus occurred from 15 to 19 December.
